Employees are friendly and quietly polite, but my experience with bank policy (which is obviously a management decision from somewhere “higher up”) is that it must be lost somewhere in the stone age. Thankfully the days have long past for treating customers coldly and requiring employees to operate under hard, unflinching policies (followed up by mailed, formal, insultingly anonymous and unsigned form letters) obviously designed solely for dogedly serving the bank an iron clad way to secure additional income/profit while legally transferring all cost and obligation to the “customer.”

Thankfully we live in a time when meeting reasonable customer needs can be pleasant for the customer AND profitable for the bank! After the following experience, thanks to the internet, I have chosen a larger but much friendlier bank in another Wyoming city where the customer comes first, I can put in and track my money where people recognize me, care about my needs, I am always treated with genuine value, common decency, compassion, personal commitment to service. I feel that profitable management policies that serve customers, potential customers, and all employees with equality, dignity, respect, and a friendly, personally vested working relationship, while providing a safe haven for my financial trust is the only kind of place to be rewarded with my business.

The event: I stopped in to Summit to ask help to verify that automatic payments (ACH) be immediately cancelled for two large loans I had just paid off. Should authorization accidentally slip through via computer error, I worried it might potentially get stuck in cyberspace, and I communicated that I feared this would unduly tie up my funds while it got sorted out.

I was told this would require a $30.00 fee for each. Everything else I suggested to be assured an accidental ACH NOT go through, I was told also required a fee ($30, the same as their overdraft charge). It seemed ludicrous to pay a fee ($60.00 total) on the chance the ACH for paid loans “might” go through or could not be stopped. I offered the name and phone number of the paid off banks’ loan officer (who had already assured me that their bank would pay any overdraft fees incurred by Summit if Summit could or would not be able stop the ACH). I asked they call her to confirm my “story” should an ACH appear through no fault of the other bank. They did not deem that necessary – policy was in effect (understood: either pay the fee or go away). I asked if they would at least call me if either amount showed up in the account (I told them the exact amounts, name of each of the paid off loans, and date wrongful ACH “may” appear in the account) should things go awry. Also told Summit in the interim I would be taking enough money out of account to cover these false ACH amounts so as not tie up these funds just in case.

Well, Summit is the first bank I have experienced an overdraft with in over 40 years of business! Both payments appeared in the account, no one called, the account went into overdraft, two charges of $30.00 were applied by Summit Bank (which of course they approved funds for!) Summit sent a form letter in the mail (received 2 days AFTER the fact, at my Hulett Post Office box located just TWO blocks from the Summit Bank, I live almost across the street from Summit bank, in a town with less than 400 population, and everyone at the bank had heard my long “story” , have my phone number, yet no-one called!)

Although my now NEW bank promptly reimbursed me for Summits overdraft fees I felt somewhat puzzled and humiliated to receive Hulett Summit Banks’ “hold notice” in the form of the following unsigned anonymous letter, addressed as so:
    “Hold Reason (s):
You are responsible for checks and other instruments that you deposit that are returned to us unpaid and for any other problems involving your deposit even after we have made funds available to you and you have withdrawn the funds..

This Notice was provided at the time of deposit of which the check subject to the Hold was included.

    Summit National Bank”

I go into this bank every two weeks to cash a check. They are all professional and curteous. Small town atmosphere of coarse and that’s quite ok. I don’t have any loans here so can’t tell you about that.

If you go in this bank make sure the lady with the long reddish dar hair doesn’t wait on you. The rest is really nice. They wouldn’t cash an IRS check without an account. Walmart will for three dollars. I don’t have an account there.

On 4 19 2023 Donna, an operations manager professionally resolved a problem regarding the theft of funds from a small branch in Montana. She was thorough and courteous, working through the issue and hopefully the money will be returned to us and all is well.
